COP30: From ambition to action

As the world prepares for COP30 — taking place in Belém, Brazil (10–21 November 2030) — the gap between promise and progress has never felt wider. Turning global climate commitments into real-world change will demand brave, bold, and honest leadership, underpinned by co-ordinated action across governments, business, and civil society.

Overcoming political uncertainty and global tensions won’t be easy. But leaders must roll up their sleeves, review what’s been achieved, and make the decisions and deals needed to deliver a fair, nature-positive, low-carbon transition.

Themes to watch for at COP30

  1. New 2035 targets (NDCs)
Countries are expected to submit upgraded national climate plans that set ambition and outline clear sectoral pathways to 2035. These will be the backbone of the next phase of global decarbonisation.
  2. Climate finance
After agreeing a new global finance goal in 2024, attention now turns to delivery, access, and accountability — and to the crucial question of who pays. Financing a just transition remains vital for emerging markets and vulnerable economies.
  3. Energy transition
COP30 will focus on operationalising the COP28 commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity and double energy-efficiency improvements by 2030 — while accelerating the transition away from all fossil fuels.
  4. Carbon markets (Article 6)
Expect discussion on implementing high-integrity carbon markets under the Paris Agreement, ensuring transparency, quality, and readiness for real transactions that drive credible emissions reductions.
  5. Adaptation & loss and damage
As climate impacts intensify, debates will centre on funding channels, project pipelines, and how to ensure resources reach the vulnerable communities most impacted by change.

As with every COP, true success will be measured by the decisions made and the actions delivered.

What businesses should do now and how Morelli Consulting can help

  • Set science-based targets and a credible transition plan – align your operations and value chains with the latest climate science and disclose progress transparently.

Morelli has experts in science-based target setting and SBTi (Science Based Target initiative) validation. We help you explore the ‘art of the possible’ on how your targets can be met and support you step by step through the SBTi validation process.

For our client AB World Foods, committing to a FLAG and non-FLAG science-based targets involved several rounds of SBTi technical enquiries during validation. Morelli helped make this a smooth process, working in harmony with all partners involved, supporting AB World Foods from data collation through to successful validation.

“Thank you to the Morelli Team for guiding us through the science-based target validation process, helping us balance other business priorities with a smooth approach to validation.  The team were proactive, helpful and very knowledgeable, down to the finer points of detail that SBTi required.”
